The round of 16 and Digital Ranking in World Cup

MrPredictions publishes the updated digital ranking of the teams that qualified for the last 16 of FIFA World Cup Russia.
The study also presents the variation of subscriptions obtained by the 16 selections. The variation considers the number of subscriptions on social media platforms: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Youtube.
The Uruguayan selection had a positive variation of 20%, followed by Russia with 17.3%. The good performance of the two teams may have motivated this increase in subscriptions in the evaluated social media.
Other selections showed a positive variation between 10 and 14%: Sweden (13.3%), Portugal (12.7%), Denmark (11.8%) and Switzerland (10.5%). However, Belgium - one of the favorites to the title - had the lowest variation around 0.05%
There was only one change of positions in the digital ranking. Argentina rose one position with a 10% positive variation and ultrapassed Colombia. Argentina is at the sixth place at the moment. Colombia occupies the 7th position and had a 3.1% variation in number of subscriptions.
It is important to emphasize that selections well placed in the digital ranking has been showing a good performance, contradicting the FIFA world ranking. Japan and Russia are good examples of this. Both teams are in the 12th and 16th places in the digital ranking, while they occupy the 61st and 70th places by the latest FIFA technical ranking.
From FIFA’s top 20, Germany (1st), Poland (8th) and Peru (11th) neither advanced to the round of 16. In addition to Chile (9th), the Netherlands (17th), Wales (18th) and Italy (19th) that have not even qualified for the World Cup.
On the other hand, among the 20 selections with the best digital ranking 14 advanced to the round of 16.
Regarding the players there was no change in the positions of the digital ranking. The Brazilian player Marcelo had the highest variation with 3.8%, followed by Neymar (1.91%) and Messi (1.7%).
