  • Oscar & Machiavelli

    Mr Stratocaster, PostDoc.

According to zeitgeist the prognostics for best picture are:

We will soon know if the Academy and the base of intentions are connected.

As the Oscar criterion is not direct voting, the mapping of public opinion does not decide - though it has influence - on the choice of winners. In digital preferences, "Arrival" is running over in the final stretch, "La La Land" has the highest accumulated history interest in the last 90 days, and "Moonlight" has long been at the top of the list

The Academy vote is intended as "technique" (*), and can solemnly ignore popular preferences, as often happened when "dark horses” won the Oscars. Or for those who can speak the language of the Academy victory, as the greatest winner of all time, Walt Disney with 26 awards.

But the most relevant event in 2017 will not be the awards winner. It will be the speeches, and the strategic aspect of the awards. For a long time an Oscar ceremony is not so awaited by political society and the economic market.

Greatly because of the recent Mrs. Meryl Streep’ speech placing the political theme directly at the center of the artistic scene. And also putting herself in the spotlight

Mrs. Streep hit: Art has a great influence on public opinion formation. She spoke what the Academy likes to hear, and has credited herself as one of the great personalities of the night.

Mrs. Streep made a mistake: by putting Football and MMA as "opponents." By saying that "Martial Arts are not Arts" has awakened against the 7th Art enemies as powerful as the Hollywood industry itself. Among them, Mr. Brady the Super Bowl hero.

Brady with Trump. Pictures say a lot

In doing so, Mrs. Streep has activated a feeling which, according to Machiavelli, has a lot of force: Prejudice.

    Niccolò Machiavelli:

“Prejudice has more roots than principles.”

By the way, with that attitude Mrs. Streep skillfully turned into a favorite in the academy environment (best actress). Although Emma Stone is the one that arouses the greatest interest of Internet users, the veteran diva already ranks second in online preferences. Mrs. Streep, the wise winner and appointed dozens of times, knows what to do to grow on the final stretch within the Academy's environment. This may have been a beautiful strategy to win an Oscar. Regardless of what kind of enemy will bring to the film art world, and to her own "political cause."

    Niccolò Machiavelli:

“All action is designated in terms of the end it seeks to achieve.”
“Those who win, no matter how they win, never win the shame.”

Streep erred in favor of her “cause”, but hit in favor of her personal purpose. Winning or not enters the party as the most awaited speech. That is knowing how to use Machiavelli.

(*) “The best of the year election is done in two stages. First, members of the Academy vote according to their specialty and they choose five options in order, in addition to electing the one they consider the best film of the year. In the second stage, participants vote in all categories from ballots that are mailed.”
